Why do people always assume emos cut themselves?

My cousin is emo and at her school people always make fun of her and say mean things like "hope you die from blood loss,where's your razor blade,can I see your scars etc." but the truth is she doesn't cut herself at all so i'm just wondering why people always think if your emo you cut yourself.
